Alocasia cucullata, commonly known as Chinese taro or hooded dwarf elephant ear, is a striking tropical plant prized for its large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves. This Alocasia variety features distinctively upright, cup-shaped leaves that can grow up to 12 inches long and 8 inches wide. Its foliage ranges from deep green to almost black, with prominent veins that add to its ornamental appeal. Alocasia cucullata thrives in warm, humid conditions and prefers well-draining soil. It is an ideal choice for indoor spaces or shaded garden areas where its dramatic foliage can be appreciated.

Plant Care:

  • Light: Alocasia cucullata thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch its leaves. In lower light conditions, growth may slow down.

  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season (spring and summer). Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, but avoid letting the plant sit in waterlogged soil to prevent root rot. Reduce watering in the winter when growth slows.

  • Humidity: Alocasia cucullata prefers high humidity levels. Mist the leaves regularly or use a humidity tray to maintain adequate moisture around the plant, especially in dry indoor environments.

  • Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Protect the plant from drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations, as it prefers stable conditions.
